Bombs aren’t cool

Well, Barack Obama has done at least one half way decent thing now. Today it was announced that the US is scrapping plans to build the National Missile Defence system.

This massively expensive, stupid idea was to build interceptors to shoot down incoming missiles in Poland and the Czech republic.

Both countries right wings’ are now up in arms after all the political risks they have taken for years to support the project. In the Czech republic the government is struggling to hold on to power against the anti-NMD Social Democrats, and 70% of the population are against the scheme.

The system failed tests again and again, and probably would have been an expensive white elephant. The US claimed it was aimed at intercepting missiles coming from Iran, although the transparent motivation of this Bush inspired scheme was to neutralise the Russian nuclear deterrent, meaning the US could do what it likes.

The Russians have obviously been furious about it for a good while.

While the decision moves fractionally away from the risk of destroying human civilisation with pointlessly destructive weapons, there’s still a long way to go. So by way of encouragement to the world’s leaders, here’s the classic comment of old school duo Double Trouble on nukes and the military-industrial complex:
